By the end 2008, the organizers of Rosso Tango Art Festival in Cagliari challenged me with the idea of creating something different for tango festivals. I had been a long time aficionado of videos, short films, documentaries and everything audiovisual related to tango. Touring tango festivals, I had found that those spaces, which are of enormous cultural value, in most cases had become a monotonous repetition of the same routines: an endless repetition of classes, exhibitions, shows and milongas. It was almost as if tango would have been dissociated from the rest of the arts. I had the vision of reuniting tango with visual arts, and of working this time on contemporary production of new materials to be showcased within tango festivals. The Sardinian festival embraced my idea and that was our first step. From then, everything that happened completely exceeded my expectations, both artistically and organizational wise. The call had been triggered, and it was embraced by all. Tango and cinema communities around the world started sending us a huge amount of short films. At the same time, festivals were learning about the project and they began proposing new presentations and asking us to co-produce different types of events, which led me to decide to make Cinefilia Tanguera an Itinerant Film Cycle, specialized in tango. Directors, artists, producers, dancers and actors wanted to show their work, and people were interested in seeing them… the work had to be done.
After 12 years, we are proud to hold the largest collection of contemporary short films about tango in the world, with an official selection of over 250 films from thirty different countries. Also, we are proud of having showcased Cinefilia Tanguera on several continents.
This gives us the strength to carry on with the dream of expanding tango as an art, from the perspective of another art, cinema.
We have been in many places; we’ll be in many more.

A finales del 2008, las organizadoras del Rosso Tango Art Festival de Cagliari me convocaron para la realización de algo innovador dentro de los festivales de tango. Desde hacía mucho tiempo que notaba que había una enorme pasión por la generación de audiovisuales desde el tango, y a la vez, recorriendo diversos festivales, encontraba que esos espacios, que son de un enorme valor cultural, en casi todos los casos se habían transformado en una rutina estática que no se movían como espacios de arte, sino específicamente de tango; un tango disociado del resto de las artes, que no salía de la eterna repetición de clases, exhibiciones y milongas. Fue entonces que les pregunté si estaban dispuestas a darme un espacio en su festival si hacía un ciclo de cine sobre tango, lo que aceptaron de inmediato. De ahí en más todo lo que sucedió excedió por completo mis previsiones, tanto desde el lado artístico como del organizativo. La convocatoria se disparó por el interés que despertaba la idea, permitiéndonos recibir una enorme cantidad de cortometrajes. A su vez, a medida que los festivales se enteraban del proyecto, comenzaron a proponerme nuevas presentaciones y a abrir nuevas opciones, lo que me llevó a tomar la decisión de hacer de Cinefilia Tanguera el primer ciclo de cine itinerante específicamente sobre tango. Había películas vinculadas al tango que nadie había visto todavía; había voluntad de mostrarlas; había que hacerlo.
Tras 12 años de vigencia, tenemos el orgullo de habernos convertido en los poseedores de la mayor colección de cortometrajes contemporáneos sobre tango en el mundo, con una Selección Oficial que supera las 250 películas provenientes de más de treinta países, así como de habernos presentamos en varios continentes.
Todo ello nos da la fuerza para seguir adelante con el sueño de difundir el arte que es el tango, desde la óptica de otro arte, el cine. Hemos estado en muchas partes; estamos partiendo hacia muchas más.
